It’s amazing what a difference continuous sunshine makes to a garden and thanks to these gorgeous winter rays, the Lennox Community Garden is flourishing more than ever.
A break in the rain also meant the working bees were able
to proceed and not only did we prep the base for a new rainwater tank, but we also completed an additional two garden beds, which are now ready for planting. Fun fact, but did you know the garden bed layout is actually in the shape of a leaf? Here’s hoping that spurs the new seedlings on
even more.
The more established plants are healthier than ever, with the canistels, rollinias, white and black sapotes starting to fruit. There’s even a new male flower on the chempejack tree, which is a relative of the jackfruit. The new cinnamon tree, donated by Rob Goodwill, is also thriving.
Given our sub-tropical climate, July is a great time to plant beetroot and silverbeet, carrots, salad greens, potatoes, beans, radishes, spring onions, leeks, Asian greens, parsley, broad beans, coriander, kale and peas. If that’s not enough to keep you busy, the cooler months are also a good time to get your compost in order and prune your fruit trees. If the chilly mornings are too unappealing for you to be out in the garden, clean up and maintain your tools and shed - it’s better than trying to do it on a sweltering summer’s day and clean tools will help prevent the spread of any plant disease.
Until next month, happy gardening.
