Another month, another gardening update for The Lennox Wave magazine…
It’s amazing what a difference continuous sunshine makes to a garden and thanks to these gorgeous winter rays, the Lennox Community Garden is flourishing more than ever.
A break in the rain also meant the working bees were able
to proceed and not only did we prep the base for a new rainwater tank, but we also completed an additional two garden beds, which are now ready for planting. Fun fact, but did you know the garden bed layout is actually in the shape of a leaf? Here’s hoping that spurs the new seedlings on even more. The more established plants are healthier than ever, with the canistels, rollinias, white and black sapotes starting to fruit. There’s even a new male flower on the chempejack tree, which is a relative of the jackfruit. The new cinnamon tree, donated by Rob Goodwill, is also thriving.
Given our sub-tropical climate, July is a great time to plant beetroot and silverbeet, carrots, salad greens, potatoes, beans, radishes, spring onions, leeks, Asian greens, parsley, broad beans, coriander, kale and peas. If that’s not enough to keep you busy, the cooler months are also a good time to get your compost in order and prune your fruit trees. If the chilly mornings are too unappealing for you to be out in the garden, clean up and maintain your tools and shed - it’s better than trying to do it on a sweltering summer’s day and clean tools will help prevent the spread of any plant disease.
Until next month, happy gardening.

Such a honour to write a monthly column for the Lennox Head Community Garden for the excellent local publication, @lennoxwave ...gardening is one of my all-time passions and it's great to finally have the opportunity to get my hands dirty and talk all things soil, seeds and produce....
May was another innovative and fun month at the Lennox Community Gardens. Not only was there the first harvest off the delicious Rollinia tree (a fruit that tastes like lemon meringue pie) but there was also the installation of a new ‘wicking’ garden bed.
In a nutshell, the idea is that the modular WaterUps wicking cells, made in Australia from recycled food-grade plastic, ensure consistent water levels in the garden bed, reducing labour needs - which is particularly handy in a community garden that might not get daily attention. This in turn promotes consistent fast growth, instead of growth spurts and lulls that happen when soil dries out then gets wet again. Incredibly, the wicking bed system also saves up to 85% of water usage and unlike surface watering, doesn’t require watering for up to six weeks.
Under the expert guidance from Paul and Rosemary from Aqualess, the installation was relatively straightforward. Basically, modular cells in the bottom of the bed were topped with perlite and biochar, which was then finished off with nutrient-rich soil from the Lismore waste centre. The only thing left to do now is plant something delicious to eat.

Keep your eyes out for this incredible chick skater, at just 12 years old, @chlo_the_flo is something of a skate prodigy...read the interview for @blankstreetpress for more of an insight into where her passion for the sport all began.
For such a young Gold Coast woman, Chloe Covell has certainly achieved an incredible level of sporting prowess and continues to carve out a name for herself in the traditionally male-dominated skateboarding sport. Not only has she won Rumble on the Reef in Mackay and the National Championships in Melbourne two years in a row, but she also recently won a bronze medal at the X Games in Japan at her first international event.
In between skating, training, school and ah, more skating, Chloe took time out of her busy schedule to chat with Blank about ‘boarders’, training and her passions in life.
